6 Minute Walk Test

The 6 Minute Walk Test (6MWT) is a simple test that shows how well your heart, lungs, blood circulation, and muscles work together during everyday activities. It helps doctors understand your overall functional exercise capacity and how breathing problems may affect you.

What happens during the 6 Minute Walk Test?

- Walking laps: You walk back and forth along a 30‑metre corridor for six minutes.

- Finger probe: An oximeter probe is placed on your finger to measure oxygen levels and heart rate while you walk.

- Goal: The aim is to walk as far as you can in six minutes. You may feel short of breath or tired, and it’s okay to stop and rest. You’ll be encouraged to continue as soon as you can.

- Walking aids: If you normally use a stick, frame, or other walking aid, you should use it during the test.

- Safety check: If your oxygen level drops too low, the test is repeated with oxygen given through a nasal cannula.

Scientists monitor you closely and guide you through the test to make sure you are safe.
